Let’s just get this out of the way: I am not talking about the bottles of “aged beauties” (aka wine) that you may have.
I am referring to our aged family, great companions, the keepers of history….Our Older Adults.
And unfortunately it is believed that at least 1 out of every 10 older adult is or has experienced abuse or neglect.
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Yes- abuse. From physical, emotional, neglect, abduction, financial, isolation, deprivation, sexual, abandonment….Abuse happens to so many people that we encounter every day. And often by people we do not expect.
And most do not get without help or interventions from others.
Did you know that older adults (by government standards is any on 65 years and older) are most likely to be victims of financial abuse or neglect than any other group of people? It is most commonly done by a family member & often is unreported? And that it is believed that this form of abuse totals over $2.6 billion (yes-BILLION) annually?
Often times, our Older Adult community may not be aware that they are being abused, especially in cases of dementia. Over half of those with dementia are believed to be exposed to abuse. As most can imagine, it also a frightening thing to talk to someone if you are being hurt or threatened by someone stronger, bigger, powerful than you.
What Can I DO? TELL SOMEONE. Do not try to intervene. Let us help. You do not need proof. It is not yur job to be a detective and search for information. Trust your instinct, that little whisper or voice inside, that tells you something is “off” or “just not right.”
If you suspect or question whether someone is possibly being hurt by someone, please contact ASAP
- Local Police Department
- Adult Protective Services (APS) http://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/County-APS-Offices
- Long Term Care Ombudsman (if the older adult lives in a group, nursing, or residential facility) at 1-800-231-4024 ( 24 hours a day)
